Archive User Cards

We have a User Card system to ensure the security and safety of both our collections and our users.

For your first visit, please bring some form of identification with you in order to get a User Card. The ID needs to show your signature and your current address (a combination of ID can be used).

Please note that this card is unique to The Royal Mail Archive. It will not apply to any other archive.

Acceptable ID includes current versions of the following:

UK citizens
 Driving Licence                    
 Bank card (plus item showing address)
 Passport
 Workplace ID card (plus item showing address)
 Student ID card


Overseas citizens
 Passport
 International Driving Licence                          
 International Student ID card
 National ID card

Search Room Regulations

To get a User Card, you will also need to read and abide by the Search Room Regulations.

Because our archive material is unique, and much of it is legally Public Record, we have a few simple rules for users to follow:

  • Please be considerate of our staff and other users when in the Search Room.

  • Please follow the guidance of our staff in all archive matters e.g. handling items, consideration of other users.

  • Please leave your bag and coat in a locker in the Reception area.

  • Please use a pencil or a personal computer when taking notes from archive material - no pens!

  • Please check with staff before attempting to copy any document yourself. See Copying services for more information.

  • Please do not smoke anywhere in The Royal Mail Archive.

  • Please do not eat or drink in the Search Room - only in the Reception area.
